Hyannis has long been a summer getaway location. Although tourists had frequented the village for decades, it gained notoriety in the 1960s when John F. Kennedy became president of the United States, as his family had vacationed here since 1925. Hyannis serves as a major ferry port, and also a terminus for bus and air transportation to Cape Cod. The village is well known for its scenery and unspoiled public beaches. Several Kennedy family attractions are throughout Hyannis including the famed JFK Museum. The Main Street Waterfront District features many retail shops, art galleries and quaint restaurants.
