Marquette, the county seat for Marquette County, is located along Marquette Bay on the southern shores of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Its economic support comes from such diverse sources as iron ore mining, metal fabrication, medical and human resource services, education, small business and tourism. It is the home of Northern Michigan University, and is the largest community in the U. P. Prominent points of interest include the Marquette Lighthouse, the historic downtown area, and Presque Isle Point Park, north of town, and the iron ore docks. This community first known as "Iron Bay," and then "Worcester" was renamed in 1850 to honor Father Jacques Marquette, the famous French Jesuit missionary to this region in the late 1600’s. In 1849 when iron ore was discovered in the area, Robert J. Graveraet, a prospector, Edward Clark, an agent for the finance company of Waterman A. Fisher of Massachusetts, and Amos. R. Harlow organized the Marquette Iron Company. Later in 1854, the Cleveland-Cliffs Company was started by Peter White, an 18 year old prospector who came to the area with Graveraet. He had the land officially platted at that time.His company survived the closing of the Iron Company, and White became one of the most influential town fathers. The town was incorporated as a village in 1859 and later as a city in 1871.
