At nearly 7,000 feet elevation, Flagstaff has four seasons and lots of sunshine. In the center of the world’s largest ponderosa pine forest, Flagstaff is a recreational hub for Northern Arizona. Areas for camping, hiking, biking, climbing and fishing are plentiful. Flagstaff is just a day’s trip from the Grand Canyon, Indian ruins, many lakes and streams and the red rocks of Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon. A city of just over 55,000 people, Flagstaff offers many cultural opportunities through its symphony, theater, museums and art centers. Tourism is one of Flagstaff’s primary industries, along with government, education and healthcare. Flagstaff also boasts an airport, shopping centers and an indoor mall, a daily newspaper, two local television stations with cable access to many more and numerous radio stations providing a variety of formats. The city is about 150 miles north of Phoenix. Flagstaff is also home to Northern Arizona University, one of the most respected mid-size universities in the country, and Coconino Community College, which offers a wide variety of classes. Flagstaff Unified School District has an outstanding reputation for progressive elementary and secondary education. The city is also the county seat of Coconino County.
