Situated 60 miles north of NYC and just north of West Point, Newburgh enjoys breathtaking views of the Hudson River and its Highlands. Founded in the mid 18th century, the city of Newburgh (pop. 2,5000) boasts the largest Historic District in New York, and one of the largest in the country. Newburgh's history is rich: most notably, it was the site of Gen. George Washington's Headquarters and in nearby New Windsor, the Cantonment, (the Continental Army's last encampment) and Knox's Headquarters. Newburgh's importance continued into the 19th century, serving as a major steamboat port and center of architectural design. Renowned designer and landscape architect Andrew Jackson Downing, and his students Calvert Vaux and Frederick Clark Withers, resided and worked in Newburgh. Andrew Jackson Davis, an associate of Downing's also designed in the city. Downing Park, which was designed by Vaux, and Frederick Law Olmstead, (who also were the designers of Central Park, New York City) graces the city with its landscaping recently restored to its original plan. Of special interest is the Crawford House; this fine example of classical revival architecture was home to Captain David Crawford, a prosperous shipping merchant. Built in 1839, it is now home to the Historical Society of Hudson Bay and the Highlands and houses an extensive collection of 19th century antiques and paintings, as well as an archival library and gift shop. Crawford House hosts a calendar of cultural and educational events, the most popular being its twice yearly tours of historic area homes. <br> Today Newburgh, known for its many churches, historic buildings, outstanding library, and innovative school system, is experiencing a commercial and cultural renaissance. Another historic jewel in the City of Newburgh, is called Holden Home It is a place where frail seniors have been finding a place to live and be cared for since 1923. Visit their site and find out more about the services offered at the home. Newburgh, known for its many celebrities, inspired the forming of Newburgh's Center for the Arts. The mission of the Newburgh Center of the Arts Inc. is "to illuminate through the arts a multi-educational venue for all people, especially the youth, the spirit of its own culture". Newburgh's Liberty Street Association has been cited for its drive and determination.
