Known as the City of Palms, McAllen has more than 40 varieties of palm trees lining its streets. Now a major commercial center, the city is the third-largest U.S. port of entry from Mexico. Although the citrus groves are gone from the busy city center, the majority of visitors are drawn by the remarkable numbers and species of birds at six wildlife refuges that all lie within an hour's drive of McAllen. In town you'll find a good collection of Mexican folk art, paintings, and sculpture at the McAllen International Museum, and a walk across the international bridge to Reynosa will yield great Mexican shopping and dining. The newly built Dodge Arena in nearby Hidalgo, Texas, is a $20 million complex that features an arena for Killer Bee ice hockey and a concert stage.
